Livestock is the backbone of the economy and the largest export, shipped mainly to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Djibouti and Ethiopia. Trade, hides and skins, frankincense and myrrh, fisheries and agriculture follow. Diaspora remittances are a major source of household income, and mobile money services are used widely for everyday payments.
Berbera port and the corridor
The Port of Berbera is operated under a long-term concession with DP World, which announced an investment of around 450 million US dollars in the port and in the road corridor towards the Ethiopian border. British International Investment later joined the project. Container capacity has been expanded substantially and vessel turnaround times have fallen.
Currency and investment climate
The Somaliland shilling is issued by the Bank of Somaliland, and the United States dollar circulates alongside it. Businesses register online through the business registration and licensing system, receiving a licence and a tax identification number. Priority sectors include energy and minerals, fisheries, livestock, logistics, telecommunications and tourism. Official statistics are published by the Central Statistics Department.
