- 1884-1887: Britain signs protection treaties with Somaliland clans and sultanates; the Somaliland Protectorate is proclaimed in 1887.
- 1940-1941: Italian occupation during the Second World War, followed by British recapture.
- 12 May 1960: The London constitutional conference sets 26 June 1960 as the date of independence.
- 26 June 1960: Somaliland becomes independent from Britain as the State of Somaliland and receives congratulatory messages from dozens of states.
- 1 July 1960: Somaliland joins the former Italian-administered south to form the Somali Republic.
- 6 April 1981: The Somali National Movement is founded; a decade of conflict follows and Hargeisa is largely destroyed in the late 1980s.
- 27 April to 5 May 1991: The Grand Conference of the Somaliland Communities is held in Burao.
- 18 May 1991: Somaliland restores its independence; the date is observed as National Day.
- 1993: The Borama conference adopts the National Charter and a transitional government.
- 1996-1997: The Hargeisa conference adopts an interim constitution; the flag and national emblem are adopted on 14 October 1996.
- 31 May 2001: The Constitution is approved in a national referendum.
- 2002: First multi-party local council elections.
- 2003: First direct presidential election, won by Dahir Rayale Kahin.
- 29 September 2005: First parliamentary elections for the 82-seat House of Representatives.
- 2010: Presidential election won by Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud (Silanyo).
- 2017: Presidential election won by Muse Bihi Abdi; iris biometric voter verification is used.
- 13 November 2024: Presidential election won by Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi (Irro) with about 64 per cent of the vote; he takes office on 13 December 2024.
- 26 December 2025: Israel becomes the first United Nations member state to recognise the Republic of Somaliland.
