President of the Republic of Somaliland Addresses the Council on Foreign Relations in New York

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), delivered a historic address in New York to the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR), one of the most influential institutions in the United States for the study and analysis of foreign policy.

The President presented Somaliland's position directly to the CFR forum, noting that for 35 years Somaliland has been a peaceful, democratic and self-governing nation that contributes responsibly to the stability of the region.

He stated that Somaliland has fulfilled all the fundamental requirements of statehood, and that it does not seek recognition as charity or aid, but asks that the reality of the statehood it has built and the independence it attained in 1960 be recognized.

He also underlined that the recognition of Somaliland is not only a historical matter but a strategic opportunity that can strengthen trade, investment, job creation and security in the Horn of Africa, in particular the protection of one of the world's most important maritime routes.

The President set out clearly that Somaliland is a democratic country that has established lasting peace and stability in a region where turmoil is common, yet is still prevented from having a voice, while Somalia, which has been unable to govern itself for more than 30 years, uses its United Nations membership to suppress and pressure the people of Somaliland.

Finally, the President of the Republic of Somaliland placed before the international community a matter that is both an argument and a claim of justice: whether the international community will continue to support an illusory diplomacy that can bring neither lasting peace nor stability, or whether it will recognize the true reality of Somaliland — a peaceful, democratic state ready to advance the economic and security interests the world shares.
