17 September 2026 - Washington, D.C. President Cirro held strategic discussions with the Atlantic Council and FDD on Horn of Africa security, maritime trade, and Somaliland-U.S. cooperation.
The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), held a meeting in Washington, D.C. with experts and officials from the international Atlantic Council and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies (FDD).
The discussions examined issues of importance to security and stability in the Horn of Africa and the Gulf of Aden, maritime security, international trade, and opportunities to strengthen strategic cooperation between Somaliland and the United States.
The President emphasized Somaliland''s democratic process, based on free and fair elections, peaceful political transitions, the participation of the Somaliland people in the democratic process, and that Somaliland has constitutional national institutions operating within a democratic system.
The President underscored that Somaliland''s experience serves as a model demonstrating how stability, statehood, and democracy can serve as pillars of security and development in the region.
Furthermore, the President highlighted the geographic importance of the Republic of Somaliland and the Port of Berbera, particularly regarding Red Sea security, affirming that Somaliland is ready to be a reliable partner that can play a meaningful role in the security and stability of the region.
