7 August 2026Office of the President
Government

7 August 2026 — Nairobi, Kenya. President Cirro met with international community representatives and agencies in Nairobi, presenting Somaliland's progress, peace, democratization, and development priorities.

The President of the Republic of Somaliland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi (Cirro), on a working visit to Nairobi, Kenya, held an important meeting with representatives of the International Community and International Organizations based in Nairobi, presenting the progress achieved by the Republic of Somaliland, the nation''s priorities, and the Government''s aspiration to strengthen international cooperation.

The President emphasized that the Republic of Somaliland seeks cooperation and investment based on shared interests and partnership, rather than dependence on external aid and handouts.

The President told the International Community representatives that peace and stability are the top priority of his Government. He noted that more than 6,000 militia fighters, along with their weapons, were peacefully demobilized, trained, and then integrated into the Somaliland National Army.

The President also noted that conflicts that occurred in the western regions were addressed through dialogue, reconciliation, and the traditional peacebuilding and mediation practices that the Somaliland community has long relied upon.

Similarly, the President clarified to the International Community that Somaliland is committed to resolving the Lascaanood issue through dialogue, mutual understanding, and a peaceful process built on brotherhood.

The President noted that the recognition granted by the State of Israel on 26 December 2025, acknowledging the sovereignty of the Republic of Somaliland, was a historic event. He stated that Israel''s recognition is not the end of Somaliland''s pursuit of international recognition, but rather part of the realization of the long-held aspirations of the Somaliland people, grounded in peace and stability, democracy, functioning state institutions, and peaceful and open transfers of power — all of which form the foundation of the Republic of Somaliland''s aspirations.

On development, the President stated that his Government places special emphasis on developing roads, water, electricity, healthcare, education, and communications. He noted that strategic road projects are underway across the country, while reducing electricity costs and investing in clean energy are important parts of efforts to accelerate economic growth.

Furthermore, the President highlighted the importance of water security, particularly the exploration and utilization of groundwater reserves, calling on the International Community for cooperation in expertise, technology, and technical fields.

The President emphasized that Somaliland does not approach the International Community with a list of requests and handouts, but rather shares real development outcomes, tangible achievements, and cooperation opportunities beneficial to both sides.

The President called on the international community''s friends and partners to assess Somaliland based on the reality on the ground, its performance, and its governance practices, and to engage accordingly while strengthening genuine partnership.

He also urged the International Community to recognize the undeniable reality of the Republic of Somaliland and its indispensable role in peace, security, trade, and overall development in the Horn of Africa region.

The President concluded by stating that cooperation between Somaliland and the International Community should be built on reality, performance, mutual respect, and shared interests, to create a future based on peace, stability, development, and lasting prosperity for the peoples of the Horn of Africa.
